Mean Deviation Calculator

In statistics, mean deviation is the mean distance of the given set of values from its mean data. The mean deviation is also known as average deviation and mean absolute deviation.

Let us understand the mean deviation with a solved example.

Example: Find mean deviation for the given set of numbers 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11.

Solution:
First, we need to find the mean by adding all the given numbers and then divide by number of values = (4+6+7+9+10+11)/8 = 47/8

= 5.87

Now, we need to subtract each of the given data with the mean value = 4-8, 6-8, 7-8, 9-8,10-8, 11-8

deviations from mean = -4, -2, -1, 1, 2, 3

By neglecting the minus signs, we need to add the deviations = 4 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 3

Sum of absolute deviations = 13

Finally, to find mean deviation we need to divide the sum of absolute deviations by number of data = 13/6 = 2.17

Hence, the mean deviation for the given set of data is found to be 2.17

Use our below online mean absolute deviation calculator by entering the data set and then click calculate to find the answer.
